Why Vehicle Ignitions Fail — and What We Actually Do About It
The ignition cylinder is a precision mechanical assembly. Inside, a series of spring-loaded wafers or pins must align exactly with the cuts on your key before the cylinder can rotate and engage the electrical switch. Over time, those wafers wear flat, springs fatigue, and the key's own worn edges stop providing a clean alignment. The result is a cylinder that turns hard, catches mid-rotation, or refuses to move at all. In some cases the key itself has worn to the point where it no longer matches its own lock — the cylinder is fine, but the key profile has drifted. Our technicians diagnose which component has actually failed before recommending a solution, because the right fix for a worn key is very different from the right fix for a cracked cylinder housing.
Beyond mechanical wear, we regularly see ignitions damaged by attempted forced entry — situations where a previous incident left the cylinder housing cracked, the retaining clip sheared, or the electrical switch behind the cylinder pushed out of position.
